Hi steveinlou, Microsoft does not recommend you to move the Program files folder from the root directory or where Operating system is installed on the computer, since the Program Files folder is present by default in the partition where the Operating System is installed on the computer. Moving the Program files folder may lead to the issues with the programs installed on the computer. Also, you should not install any programs on external hard drive you will not be able to use it. If you have an internal hard drive then you can customize the installation of programs and when you are prompted to select the location to install the program you can mention that location. You may refer the below link that helps you reclaim disk space on Windows XP and Windows Server 2008-based computers:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/956324 Regards:Samhrutha G S - Microsoft Support.Visit our Microsoft Answers Feedback Forum and let us know what you think.

I would be interested in seeing a Disk Defragmenter report on your internal drive. Open Disk Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents Folder. Open the file, and place the cursor anywhere in the file, select Edit, Select All to highlight all text and copy and paste into the body of your message. Do this before running Disk Defragmenter as it is more informative.Hope this helps, Gerry Cornell

I have old computer with 40 G C drive that is full. I use external 500GB FreeAgent devise for backup storage. Can I transfer programs like Microsoft Office to the F drive and still use the functionality normally? The short answer to your question is No.Unless an application is very simple (just an executable file), when it is installed on a Windows computer numerous entries are made in the system registry. If you simply move the files from the C drive to another location, Windows will be unable to locate various components of the application. The proper way to "move" an application is to uninstall it and then re-install, specifying the install location. Even then, however, an application like Microsoft Office will likely place some of its files in the Windows system directory and/or other locations on the system drive even if the program's directory and any subdirectories are no longer in C:\Program Files. Thus, you will gain less space on the C drive than you might have thought.Large hard drives are relatively inexpensive. Your best course of action would be to buy the largest drive that is compatible with your old computer, clone the contents of your current 40GB drive to the new drive, and then replace your 40GB drive with the new one. You can either use a commercial cloning application (e.g., Acronis True Image, Casper, Paragon Drive Backup) or you probably can obtain free cloning software from the manufacturer of the new drive you purchase.

the problem with external drives is that the drive letter is volatile. the only safe option is for you to move your personal folders over to it. it is highly likely that after you do, your c drive will have gained enough space to comfortably run windows and programs on it - since 40 gigs is usually more than adequate for them. -- db`...><)))> ."steveinlou" wrote in message news:bebc6285-338e-42d1-8c26-ee125486cc36...I have old computer with 40 G C drive that is full.
